Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome, is a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body. The name fibromyalgia comes from three Latin words:  

  • ‘fibro’i.e. fibrous tissues( tendons and ligaments)
  • ‘my’ meaning muscles
  • ‘algia’ meaning pain

Symptoms And Signs–

  1. Body aches
  2. Chronic facial muscle pain or aching
  3. Difficulty sleeping
  4. Headaches
  5. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  6. Memory difficulties and cognitive difficulties
  7. Multiple tender areas (muscle and joint pain) on the back of the neck, shoulders, sternum, lower back, hips, shins, elbows, knees
  8. Muscle stiffness
  9. Numbness and tingling
  10. Palpitations
  11. Reduced exercise tolerance
  12. Sleep disturbances
  13. Tension or migraine headaches

 Causes–

  1. Trauma(Physical or emotional)
  2. An abnormal pain response
  3. Sleep disturbances
  4. An infectious microbe( virus)
  5. Female(20-50 yrs)

      Investigations—

  1. History of a least 3 months of widespread pain
  2. Pain and tenderness in at least 11 of 18 tender-point sites
    1. Arms (elbows)
    2. Buttocks
    3. Chest
    4. Knees
    5. Lower back
    6. Neck
    7. Rib cage
    8. Shoulders
    9. Thighs
  1. X-ray

Treatment–

Prevention–

There is no proven prevention for this disorder. However, over the years, with Ayurvedic treatment, management of the disease have improved.
