Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production

CAUSES—               

  1. Amiodarone
  2. Anti-thyroid drugs
  3. Congenital defects
  4. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  5. Idiopathic atrophy
  6. Infiltrative diseases (uncommon)
  7. Iodine deficiency
  8. Lithium
  9. Pituitary/hypothalamic dysfunction(rare)
  10. Postpartum thyroiditis
  11. Radiation to the brain
  12. Radiation treatments to the neck to treat different cancers, which may also damage the thyroid gland
  13. Radioactive iodine used to treat hyperthyroidism
  14. Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland
  15. Viral thyroiditis( causes hyperthyroidism; is often followed by temporary or permanent hypothyroidism)

 Symptoms And Signs–

Early Symptoms —

  • Brittle hair and nails
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Dry and Scaly Skin
  • Heavy or Irregular Periods
  • Muscle Aches and Weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Restricted growth(Children)
  • Sensitivity To Cold
  • Slowness in Body and Mind
  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain

Late symptoms

  • Anaemia
  • Deafness
  • Dull facial expressions
  • Low-pitched and hoarse voice
  • Puffy-looking face
  • Slow heart rate
  • Thinned (or partly missing) eyebrows

Investigations–

  1. Thyroid function test
    • Raised level of TSH indicates an underactive thyroid.
    • A low level of T4 confirms hypothyroidism.
  2. Blood test—
    • cholesterol
    • liver enzymes
    • prolactin
    • sodium
