Hypothyroidism is a condition characterized by abnormally low thyroid hormone production

Causes              

  • Amiodarone
  • Anti-thyroid drugs
  • Congenital defects
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Idiopathic atrophy
  • Infiltrative diseases (uncommon)
  • Iodine deficiency
  • Lithium
  • Pituitary/hypothalamic dysfunction(rare)
  • Postpartum thyroiditis
  • Radiation to the brain
  • Radiation treatments to the neck to treat different cancers, which may also damage the thyroid gland
  • Radioactive iodine used to treat hyperthyroidism
  • Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland
  • Viral thyroiditis( causes hyperthyroidism; is often followed by temporary or permanent hypothyroidism)

    • Raised level of TSH indicates an underactive thyroid.
    • A low level of T4 confirms hypothyroidism.
  • Blood test
